As a Practice Tarot Reader, your role is to provide supportive insights through Tarot. However, there may be times when a client shares something that suggests they are at risk—whether due to self-harm, abuse, or other mental health concerns. In these situations, it’s essential to recognize the limits of your role and respond with care and sensitivity.
Here’s how to approach this situation and ensure the client is directed to appropriate support.
1. Assess the Level of Risk
Before responding, carefully evaluate the client’s statements:
-
Clear Signs of Immediate Risk: Look for direct phrases like “I am in danger,” “I’m hurting myself,” or “I need help to escape a harmful situation.” These are strong indications that the client may need immediate professional assistance.
-
Less Specific or Vague Language: If the client mentions feeling overwhelmed, lost, or stuck, they may not be in immediate danger but could still benefit from a compassionate response.
-
If You’re Unsure: If you’re uncertain about the severity of the situation, reach out to us first. Share the exact language the client used that is concerning you. We will treat the information confidentially and guide you in crafting an appropriate response.
2. Acknowledge Your Role and Limitations
If you believe the client is at risk, it’s important to kindly and compassionately acknowledge your limitations as a Tarot reader. Focus on validating their courage in sharing and encourage them to seek professional support.
For example:
“Thank you for sharing what you’re going through. I want to acknowledge how brave you are for speaking up. As a Tarot reader, I’m here to offer guidance through the cards, but I’m not trained to provide the kind of support you may need. I encourage you to reach out to someone who is more equipped to help you at this time.”
3. Share Crisis Resources
If the client is in crisis, direct them to appropriate resources. Below are organizations that cover a wide range of issues, including crisis intervention and support for victims of abuse. Choose the most relevant resource(s) for the client’s situation:
- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (US): Call or text 988 or visit 988lifeline.org
- Samaritans (UK): Call 116 123 or visit samaritans.org
- Lifeline Australia: Call 13 11 14 or visit lifeline.org.au
- National Domestic Violence Hotline (US): Call 800-799-SAFE (7233) or visit thehotline.org
- Global Support: Visit befrienders.org to find local crisis support services worldwide.
4. Leave the Reading As Is
If the client’s situation makes it difficult for you to proceed with the reading, leave it in your “In Progress” folder. It will automatically cancel after 14 days without further action on your part.
5. Reach Out for Support If Needed
If you feel uncertain or need additional guidance, don’t hesitate to contact us. These situations require a high level of care and compassion, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
